Project description
Through the Flower Rich Futures initiative, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust is unlocking the full potential of its grasslands by investing in essential seed harvesting and ground preparation equipment—tools that will power nature recovery far beyond a single site.
This is more than machinery. It’s a step-change in our ability to restore species-rich grasslands using sustainable, locally adapted seed. By harvesting and sowing from our own sites, we can create vibrant, flower-filled landscapes in a way that is resilient, cost-effective, and built for the long term. These grasslands will hum with life—supporting pollinators, invertebrates, birds, and the complex web of species that depend on them.
This approach also strengthens our wider land management. By reducing reliance on mechanical cutting and reinforcing conservation grazing and woodland management, we’re working with natural processes to shape healthier, more dynamic landscapes. The result is a living system—resilient, diverse, and delivering lasting benefits for both people and nature.
Project location
Based at Greystones Farm in the Cotswolds, this project will extend its benefits across a network of priority sites within the Big Chalk landscape, including Frith Wood, Knapp Lane, Badgeworth, Stuart Fawkes, Blackness Banks, Coaley Peak, and Lower Woods SSSI. Together, these sites form a vital part of the Cotswold–Mendip ecological corridor.
Fit with the Big Chalk programme
Flower Rich Futures sits at the heart of the Big Chalk vision: restoring and reconnecting species-rich grasslands across chalk and limestone landscapes to build resilient ecosystems at scale.
By creating living seedbanks of locally adapted wildflowers, this project is not just restoring habitats for today—it is securing the future of these landscapes. This long-term, landscape-scale approach strengthens ecological connectivity, boosts biodiversity, and underpins nature’s ability to adapt in a changing climate. It’s restoration designed to last, rooted in collaboration and shared ambition across the Big Chalk network.
Wider social and environmental considerations
Flower Rich Futures is as much about people as it is about habitats. By strengthening partnerships between landowners, land managers, and communities, the project supports shared learning and champions wildlife-friendly land management across the landscape.
At the same time, these restored grasslands will deliver powerful nature-based solutions—supporting pollinators, building climate resilience, and creating inspiring places where nature can visibly recover.
Through integration with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust’s Nature Reserve Condition Monitoring programme, progress will be tracked with rigour and intent, ensuring this work continues to evolve, improve, and deliver lasting benefits for generations to come.
The Big Chalk programme and Nature Recovery Fund is funded through the Protected Landscapes Partnership, supported by Defra.
